Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical
Company
William R. Warner, an 1856 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy,
perfected a process to sugar-coat pills. This alleviated the problem of
taste that accompanied many of the medicines in use at that time.
Initially he manufactured these pills in his drugstore and sold them through Bullock and Crenshaw of Philadelphia and then under his own name.
By 1886 his business had expanded and he built a separate manufacturing plant in
Philadelphia which he called "Warner Hall."
The Warner Company acquired many companies over the years. They included, Richard Hudnut
in 1888, a cosmetic firm and Chilcott Laboratories in 1945. Other acquisitions included Lambert
(manufacturer of Listerine), Emerson Drug Company (manufacturer of Bromo-Seltzer
& Fizzies) in 1956, and The American Chicle Company in 1960.
The biggest merger was the acquisition of Parke Davis in 1970. Then in 2000, Pfizer purchased Warner-Lambert.
