Bubble Gum
Bubble gum was invented in 1928 by a 23 year old Fleer Chewing Gum Company accountant named Walter E. Diemer. In an interview before his death, he explained,  "It was an accident. I was doing something else and ended up with something with bubbles."

Although an accountant by trade, Mr. Deimer liked to experiment with gum recipes in his spare time.  In doing so, he accidentally stumbled upon a recipe that was totally unique.

It was less sticky than standard chewing gum yet stretched more easily.  He saw the possibilities carried a large chunk of the creation to a local store  It quickly sold out.

Fleer began marketing the new gum as "Dubble Bubble" and Diemer himself taught salesmen to blow bubbles.  This helped them demonstrate how this gum differed from all other chewing gums.

According to his wife, Walter Diemer never received royalties for his invention but he didn't mind.  He stayed with Fleer for decades, eventually reaching a position as senior vice president.

Pepsin

Pepsin, a digestive protease released by cells in the stomach, functions to degrade food proteins into peptides.  According to American Heritage Dictionary, pepsin is derived from the Greek word pepsis, meaning digestion (peptein: to digest).  Pepsin was discovered by Theodor Schwann in 1836.  It was the first animal enzyme to be discovered.
