What
do rare, heirloom seeds have to do with candy and gum? Well,
in the case of the
Victory Seed Company, they happen to be two
forms of edible history which we work at to help preserve.
The common fate that they both face is that varieties tend to
quietly slip into history becoming forever unavailable.
By
purchasing classic,
nostalgic
gum and
candy varieties from our store, you are actively creating a
demand for the products. This helps to ensure that the
companies, many of which are still small, family operated
endeavors, keep producing. Additionally, proceeds from your
candy and gum purchases fund our work researching, locating, and
growing rare seed varieties that are threatened with extinction.

back from time to time to see what's new. |

Using Your
Nostalgic Gum Wrappers To Create a Classic
Gum Wrapper Chain
I will be the first to admit that those
"simpler times" us older folks always tell the younger generation about
could get boring. On rainy days, after the chores and homework were
done, we had to keep ourselves entertained. There were no video
games, no videos for that matter, and so we invented things like gum
wrapper chains.
Below are step-by-step instructions for
creating your very own chewing gum wrapper chain. The key component
for this project is of course, stick chewing gum wrappers.
The varieties of chewing gum that we have
available (Beeman's,
Blackjack,
Adam's Sour,
Teaberry,
Tendermint,
Clark's Cinnamon) still all have printed wrappers suitable for
chain making.
|
 |
1. Open the chewing gum
wrapper. For obvious reasons, printed wrappers are desired as
they make interesting chains. |
|
 |
2. Crease in the middle and
tear in half along the length. Wetting the crease with your
tongue helps but it not necessary. |
|
 |
3. Fold the wrapper half
lengthwise, in half. |
|
 |
4. Open and fold one edge of
the wrapper in towards the center fold line you just created in step
3. |
|
 |
5. Fold the other edge in
towards the center. |
|
 |
6. Fold in half along the
length. |
|
 |
7. Fold the wrapper from
step 6 in half. |
|
 |
8. Then fold the ends in
toward the center. |
|
 |
9. Repeat steps 1 through 8.
Step 8 creates a folded wrapper with slots. Slide the prongs
of the first wrapper into these tabs. |
|
 |
10. Keep adding links to the
chain. |
If you hurry, you might catch the
current world record holder. Mr. Duschl's chain now includes over
one million wrappers, is over nine miles long, and has taken forty years of effort! (see link below)
