The dream of a natural and beautiful wildflower meadow
is an attainable goal but only with a bit of hard work and realistic
expectations.
The first thing to understand is that when you look at
those wild meadows, it has taken nature millennia to create them. You
cannot expect to scratch the soil, scatter the seeds, and see a Monet
painting emerge.
Getting your wildflower planting established will
require as much planning, preparation and maintenance as any landscaping
project. If you make no effort to prepare soil properly, apply seed, and
maintain the site by weeding and watering, you are almost guaranteed to
fail.
However, if you do take the time to baby your wildflower
garden for a couple of years, and if your collect seeds and reseed your
annuals, you will be rewarded with a sea of color for many years to come.
Start by preparing the site as you would for any new
lawn or garden. Grass and weeds can quickly overgrow your flower
seedlings. Next loosen the soil and amend if required.
Sow seeds in the early spring as soon as you can work
the soil. Spread the seeds thinly and evenly and lightly rake in.
Water and keep moist.
Once sown, your seeds require consistent moisture for
the first three to four weeks. This is a critical requirement in
establishing your wildflower garden. Annuals varieties will typically
germinate within one to two weeks with perennials taking up to three
weeks. As the plants become established, they require less moisture to
survive although they will bloom longer if you do water them.
These
annual / perennial wild flower mixtures were designed to fit a broad
cross-section of conditions that generally exist within a given
geographic region. They contain both native and non-native
wildflowers. Non-native species were chosen on the basis of their
versatility or ability to adapt to various conditions and to provide
more balance and color. Our small packets will seed an area of about
ten square feet at a rate of fifty to sixty seeds per square foot. They are
prefect for small beds or container plantings.
