Native
to Southern Europe and one of the oldest garden plants. It was
introduced into England in 1573 and was a familiar plant in colonial
gardens. It was advertised for sale in Boston in 1760,
cultivated by Thomas Jefferson, and sold by Minton Collins of Richmond
in 1793.
