A
Critical Component of Variety Preservation
A
seed bank is an important tool for preserving
biodiversity, but it is only as secure as the plan to grow out each and ever
variety on a scheduled basis. This is the only way that the viability
of the seeds can be maintained at a safe level.
Since
it is impossible to completely perform this duty with our current resources, teaming
up with like-minded volunteers and forming a community of gardeners, growers,
and mentors is instrumental in our seed preservation plan.
There
are several areas where you can help. We have opportunities for skill
levels from beginning gardeners through advanced seed savers. If you
love gardening and possess a passion for heirloom seeds, we hope that you
will plug into this project at a level where you feel comfortable.
-
Trial
Gardener - Open to gardeners from the beginner to the
trained seed grower. We will send you seeds and you will keep
notes about the variety,
take pictures, and submit the information at the end of the season.

Seed Guardian
- Guardians are experienced seed savers interested in becoming an
extension of our seed bank. They have a desire to be responsible for one or more seed varieties, growing them out on an
annual or biannual basis, and supplying us with new stock on an as-needed basis.

Seed Grower
- These experienced seed savers and small farmers are the backbone of the seed
preservation process. Growers volunteer, or are sometimes
contracted with, to multiply out seeds that are then offered to gardeners through the Victory Seed Web site and mail-order
catalog. Sales of seeds is the primary mechanism for securing operating capital. Commercial availability is the true measure
of a variety's survival.

Mentor
-
Because modern Agricultural Extension Agents and the agricultural
colleges for whom they work often focus on modern hybrid and GMO
plant varieties, we are looking for motivated people who have
experience raising open-pollinated varieties in their geographical
area. As the title implies, "Mentors" are expected to share
their broad range of horticultural experience with others. Mentors already
have a relationship with us, are typically identified by the Victory
Seed Company, and invited to apply. However, if you believe that
you would like to contribute in this capacity, please
contact us.
We look forward to having you join and participate in this work.
