Mike's
Corner

I have not been very good about keeping people informed about recent events.  I am sorry about that.

With a desire to accomplish a lot, I have taken on more work than I can fit into an 18 hour day and life has turned into one big blur of activity.

The common routine is to get up as soon as my body will let me, rush outside to take advantage of the daylight hours, pop in and out of the office as required, settle into my desk chair to do office work after dark, head into bed at 2 or 3 in the morning for a few hours of necessary sleep, and start all over.

Although it might sound like drudgery to you, it is not.  Since it is work that I am passionate about, if I could work without requiring sleep, I would.

I really do feel blessed that I have this opportunity and am so thankful that you all choose to support our work.

2005

Catalog

As this is typed, we are actively working on publishing the 2005 catalog.

Other seed companies seem to be in a competition or race to see how early they can get their catalog out.  We will never get caught up in that.

Our goal is to have the catalog to the post office during the first or second week in January.

This gives us time to finish the seed harvest and to  germination test all of the inventory so that we know what we will have available.

If you are a regular customer, you will be on the list.  If you have never ordered from us and would like to be on the 2005 mailing list, let us know.

What's New for 2005

In spite of odd weather patterns this past spring and summer, we had a fairly productive seed growing season.

You can see new varieties being added to our list for 2005 by clicking here.

Please check back.  As they are prepared for sale, we will update the web site and make the links active.

What's New Around the Farm

Wow . . . this feels like I am writing one of those family newsletters you get in Christmas cards.  Sorry about that.

Under the category of personnel changes, we are still managing exclusively with family members but it is getting tougher.  Our two oldest daughters have left the farm this year.  One was married in July and the other left in August to pursue a career in nursing.  The rest of us have taken on more responsibilities to fill the voids.

In June we received a very generous donation in the form of a personal library of horticultural books.  In combination with our reference library and collection of historic seed catalogs and publications, the Historical Horticulture Library is rapidly growing. We hope to reconfigure a large space in the "hay barn" to create the physical home for the library.  The dream is to make much of the rarer materials available online.  This will require time and money.

There are tons of little things that happen on nearly a daily basis.  I will try and get back to a more regular schedule of updating this newsletter.

Until then, please do explore the web site for new information.
