'Shirazi' is Turkish-type of tobacco originating from Iran. The leaves tend to be thick and heavy, high in nicotine, and are valued for their rich flavors and aroma. Historically sun-cured, it is used for cigarette and pipe blends. It is also a variety used in traditional Mu‘assel, meaning "honeyed" in Arabic, or "shisha," which is a syrupy tobacco mix containing molasses and vegetable glycerol which is then smoked in a hookah. It should be noted that some seed merchants have misspelled the name and are selling it as "Sherazi." This is incorrect.
Our seed is grown for us by David Pendergrass from Tennessee originally obtained from the USDA, accession number PI 483078, donated there in 1983 by the Iranian Tobacco Institute, Shiraz, Iran.
Tobacco plants are very interesting, ornamental, and have uses apart from consumption. This section of the website is intended for the historical and informational purposes of thinking adults.
