100 days, determinate — The plants are small, compact, reaching about twenty inches in height with purple flowers and pods that contain three seeds each.  This combined with its early maturity makes it an excellent choice for home gardeners.  The reddish-brown beans are large and contain 43% protein and 19% oil.

'Ugra' (incorrectly labeled "Ugra Saja" at the USDA[2]) was developed by Svalöf AB in Malmöhus, Sweden[1] by crossing 'Wisconsin Black' with 'Brunatna Vilenska' (a Polish variety).  It was released in the early 1950s.  USDA accession number is PI 198067.  Each packet contains 25 to 30 seeds.

  1. Svalöf AB later merged with Weibulls AB to form Lantmännen SW seed, a partly Swedish owned seed company. The company is headquartered in Landskrona (Southern Sweden). The town Landskrona is located within the county administration area called Malmö (once called Malmöhus).
  2. "‘Ugra saja’ is actually just named Ugra. The ‘saja’ is probably just a misspelling of soja (soya in Swedish)." - Dr. Fredrik Fogelberg, Swedish Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.
