Spartan Arrow

52 days — The plants are hardy and upright, about two feet tall, and are heavy producers.  The pods are concentrated and remove easily from the plants.  They are green, oval in cross section, straight, five to six inches long, and stringless. A perfect variety for picking when they are young and tender as a French filet haricot vert, or green bean.

Selected from a stabilized cross between 'Tenderbest' and 'Contender', it is Bean Common Mosaic Virus and New York 15 strain of Bean Virus 1 resistant. 'Spartan Arrow' was bred by the Michigan Agricultural Extension Station, East Lansing, and was released by Northrup, King and Co., Minneapolis, Joseph Harris, Rochester, New York, among others, in 1963. Each ounce is approximately 80 seeds.

Planting Instructions:
Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure you keep them well watered in the summer heat.

Beans are a tender vegetable and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF. Sow seeds 1-1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.

For seed saving, allow pods to remain on the plant until they are brittle and open easily. However, if you live in an area with a short growing season, harvest as close to dry as possible and finish drying indoors. Rain and freezing temps will damage beans.
