Amsterdam

50 to 70 days — 'Amsterdam', also known as 'Amsterdam Forcing', is reportedly a Nantes-type of carrot. Often grown as an early season variety, 'Amsterdam' produces roots that are deep-orange in color and almost coreless. Average length is four to six inches and roots tend to be cylindrical and slim in shape. This carrot is also an exceptional forcing variety, which makes it a good choice for greenhouse use, in addition to outdoor production.

When grown in heavier soil as a main season variety, the roots remain relatively straight and but can reach ten inches or more in length and still remain tasty. An old European variety, 'Amsterdam' first started being listed in American garden seed catalogs in the early twentieth century. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 650 seeds.

Planting Instructions: Loosen rich, well-drained soil to a depth of one foot, in a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight per day.

Plant outdoors in spring as soon as the ground can be worked. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep, ½ inches apart in rows that are spaced 12 to 18 inches apart.

Keep moist until germination. Thin to 1 to 2 inches apart after the seedlings are 1½ inches tall.

Water as required and keep soil cultivated to control weeds.
