With the soil temperature at 75ºF, germination occurs in seven to twenty-one days. Flowering usually begins about sixty days after sprouting with their blooming period lasting for about ten weeks, from summer into the fall.
Although partial shade is tolerated, as a native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America, they prefer sunny, well-drained, soil leaning to the alkaline side of the pH scale (6.0-8.5 pH). Once they are up and growing, they tolerate heat and drought.
The flowers are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators. Since birds like the seeds, leave plants in beds over winter to provide a food source. Each packet contains 0.5 gram, which is approximately 90 seeds.
