Pike
 Cucumis melo L. Reticulatus Group

80 days — The plants are vigorous and productive producing fruit that are heavily netted and depending on the growing conditions, weighing between three and six pounds each. The light-orange colored flesh is fragrant, juicy and sweet. An excellent choice for both home gardens and growers producing for a local market. They are too tender to store or ship well.

This Oregon heirloom was selected by Mr. Aaron Pike of Monmouth, Oregon (Pike & Young Seed Company) in the 1930s. A stabilized cross between 'Spear' and 'Hearts of Gold', he bred 'Pike' melon for its ability to thrive in heavy, dry soil. When dry farmed under those conditions, the melons average about three pounds each. However, when grown in rich, irrigated soils, their size doubles. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 30 to 36 seeds.

Planting Instructions: The seeds can be directly sown in spring after the soil has warmed or started indoors three to four weeks before your last expected frost.

Indoors, plant two to three seeds per pot, ½ inch deep, thinning to best plant. Do not disturb roots.

Outdoors, plant six to eight seeds, ½ inch deep, in hills spaced four feet apart. Transplant or thin to three plants per hill.

Young plants are cold sensitive and some cover protection at nights may be required. Mulch or cultivate to control weeds.
