Big Max
Cucurbita maxima

120 days — 'Big Max', as its name implies, will commonly grow big; fifty to seventy pounds big. It will never set any world records, but with a little special attention, its fruits can surpass one hundred pounds. As you might imagine, it does needs plenty of room to grow.

It is a beautiful variety popular for pumpkin patches, u-pick operations, roadside stands, yard decorations, etc. Although primarily marketed as an ornamental variety and for carving into Jack O'Lanterns, its three to four inch thick, bright-yellow orange flesh is of excellent cooking quality as well.

Originally introduced by the W. Atlee Burpee Company in their 1964 seed annual. Each packet contains two grams, which is approximately 8 to 10 seeds.

  1. "Big Max Pumpkin Is A Monster," Spokane Daily Chronicle, May 22, 1964, page 10.
  2. Burpee's 1964 Seed Annual, W. Atlee Burpee, Co.

Although this variety contains a modern company's name in its historical record, the seed we are offering is in no way sourced from, "owned by" or connected with that company. The name is simply the historically accurate, common name for the variety giving credit to the seedsman that originally released it.

Really enjoyed growing these
Very large vines, beautiful plant. The bugs loved them so much, I didn't get a chance to see any fruit, which is always a very good sign. NO GMO! I will be trying these again in the future.
