— The regular leaf plants of 'Mingold' are very early and produce good quantities of fruit that are light yellow, deepening to a golden color when fully ripe. They are globe-shaped, smooth, average about three ounces each, and are mild with a nice, tart aftertaste.
Bred by the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station as a stabilized cross between 'Bonny Best
' and an unspecified numbered strain. 'Mingold' was commercially introduced by the McFaden Seed Company in 1938 and quickly offered by many other northern seed companies.
Here is what Farmer Seed and Nursery out of Faribault, Minnesota said when they introduced it in their 1940 seed catalog:
"Of fine flavor, it fills the growing demand for Yellow Tomato Juice and sliced with red, makes a colorful salad. the fruits are medium large, nearly globular, solid, with think walls and cross sections."
'Mingold' was an an "All-America Selection®
" winner in 1940. The foundation for our stock was USDA GRIN accession number PI 644800, originally sent to us by author and tomato authority Craig LeHoullier
in 2003. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.
