Ohio Red Certified Naturally Grown Seed

90 days, indeterminate — The regular leaf plants bear red, elongated to flattened-globe shaped fruits that weigh four to twelve ounces. Released in 1929 by the Livingston Seed Company, it was described as an, "entirely new type of tomato." These are the kinds of statements that intrigue us so we were excited to receive some seed from author and tomato authority Craig LeHoullier back in 2003 that he received from the USDA, ARS accession number NSL 27404.

Picking up where the Livingston's left off, we have been growing and selecting for the traits described in the historical record. But taking our queue from Livingston's, we are re-releasing it 'Ohio Red' in 2012 with the disclaimer that its fruits do have variability in shape. As Livingston's put it, "It is not entirely fixed in type as yet, but we are making some of the finest selections for our yearly plantings, and it will be interesting to note the improvement as the years go by." There are approximately 20 seeds per packet.

Although the name of this variety contains a modern company's name, the seed we are offering is in no way sourced from, "owned by" or connected with that company. The name is simply the historically accurate, common name for the variety giving credit to the seedsman that originally released it.
