Zinnia
'Luminosa'
Zinnia elegans

Currently unavailable, we suggest State Fair Mix and California Giants Mix as alternatives.

The blossoms of 'Luminosa' zinnias are large, bright pink, and sit atop long stems making them well-suited for growing towards the backs of flower beds, although they thrive equally well in containers. The plants grow to about thirty-six inches tall and when kept dead-headed, bloom continually until the first fall frost. Beautiful as a cut flower, zinnias are attractive to pollinating insects, especially butterflies.

Introduced in 1932, James Vick described 'Luminosa' in his 1934 Garden and Floral Guide as being, "A new color. Bright deep pink overlaid with soft shades and tones of salmon." He went on to say that, "Words cannot picture the exquisite beauty of this new addition to the lovely rose shades in the dahlia-flowered class." Each packet contains 1 gram, which is approximately 100 seeds.

After all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed, sow seeds 1/8" to 1/4" deep in an location that has rich, moist soil and receives full-sun. Final spacing of plants should be 12 to 18 inches. For earlier blooming, start seeds indoors in pots, under lights, preferably on a heat-mat to ensure the soil temperature remains between 75º to 80ºF. Germination should occur in 10 to 14 days
